Getaround Receives $1,725,000 in Federal Funding

Getaround, a San Francisco, CA-based peer-to-peer car sharing company, has received $1,725,000 in federal funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Getaround will use the funds to participate in a joint initiative with the City of Portland to launch its peer-to-peer car sharing service in the greater Portland metropolitan area, which will take place in February 2012. A preliminary launch will take place at, and in partnership with, Portland State University on January 1, 2012, coinciding with the enactment of Oregon HB 3149, the legislation enabling personal vehicle sharing in Oregon.

As part of the government initiative, the company will work with the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC) to research the dynamics and impacts of peer-to-peer car sharing.
