Micledi Microdisplays Raises Series A Funding

Micledi Microdisplays, a Leuven, Belgium-based developer of microLED display modules, raised an undisclosed amount in Series A funding.

This brings the company’s total funding to date to nearly $30m. Backers included imec.xpand, PMV, imec, KBC and SFPIM.

The company intends to use the funds to expand the team, design and build an active backplane ASIC, and create a fully-functional microLED display module that can be used in glasses for AR displays.

Led by CEO Sean Lord, Micledi Microdisplays is a developer of microLED display modules for the augmented reality (AR) market. Its technology is based on an innovative combination of III/V materials processing, 3D integration and 300mm silicon-based processing combined with a proprietary ASIC to provide a self-contained, compact monolithic AR display with image quality and efficiency.

Commenting on the news, Sean Lord said: “Our door is open to engagements with some of the world’s largest and most innovative electronic product manufacturing companies, most of whom are working on their own internal development projects for augmented reality (AR) displays in such diverse use cases as smart-wearable devices and automotive HUDs. This level of total funding to date is almost unheard of for a four-year-old startup.”

The company was spun-out from imec, a Belgian R&D center, in 2019.
