Risc Zero Raises $40M in Series A Funding

Risc Zero

Risc Zero, a Seattle, WA-based developer of general purpose zero-knowledge (ZK) virtual machine technology, raised $40M in Series A funding.

The round was led by Blockchain Capital and joined by seed round lead Bain Capital Crypto, with participation from Galaxy Digital, IOSG, RockawayX, Maven 11, Fenbushi Capital, Delphi Digital, Aglaé Ventures, IOBC, Tribute Labs’ Zero Dao, Figment Capital, and Alchemy Ventures.

The company intends to use the funds to bring its Bonsai computing platform to market, supporting rapid application development and deployment in both cloud and decentralized environments.

Led by CEO Brian Retford, Risc Zero provides a ZK Virtual Machine (zkVM) that enables developers to build ZK-powered applications with conventional programming languages such as Rust and C++. Utilizing advanced features such as continuations, zkVM can run programs of arbitrary complexity and scope while utilizing off-the-shelf computing platforms.

With Bonsai, developers can focus on writing their application instead of worrying about the complexities of proof orchestration and server infrastructure. Bonsai will bring massively parallel ZK-proving functionality to any developer, in any language, on any chain.
