Saildrone Inc., an Alameda, Calif.-based provider of ocean data collected by a fleet of unmanned, autonomous sailing drones, closed a $14m Series A funding.
The round – which follows the mission related investment from The Schmidt Family Foundation, a private foundation created by Eric and Wendy Schmidt – was led by Social Capital with participation from the Capricorn Investment Group and Lux Capital.
The company intends to use the funds to expand fleet of sailing drones, enhance data processing capacity, and scale commercial operations.
Led by Richard Jenkins, founder and CEO, and Sebastien de Halleux, COO, Saildrone provides wind and solar powered unmanned surface vehicles (USV) acting as ocean and atmospheric measurement devices. Saildrones have now sailed over 60,000 nautical miles, with missions in the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico and Bering Sea.
