New York City-based food media company Spoon University raised $2m in seed funding.
The round was led by SoftTech VC with participation from Lerer Hippeau Ventures, Box Group, VaynerRSE, BBG Ventures, MATH fund, Joanne Wilson, Howard Morgan, Project Mayhem Ventures, Kosinski Ventures and RuggedVC. In conjunction with the funding, Stephanie Palmeri of SoftTech VC will join the board.
The company intends to use the funds to focus on building more chapters, growing the community of student members and contributors, and launching a video program.
Led by CEO Mackenzie Barth and CTO Sarah Adler, Spoon University is a food network for millennials which leverages proprietary skill-building and analytics tools to enable them to train and power college students to write, photograph, video and market the brand at college campuses around the world.
The students in the network are organized into teams and autonomously write, edit, photograph, publish and promote their own content. Each school has its own homepage on a branded subdomain with geotargeted content, and nationally relevant content is shared across the network. The site averages 1.5mm monthly unique visitors.
