I-Rox Raises €12M in Funding

I-ROX, a Toulouse, France-based startup in the mining industry that aims to provide an efficient grinding process to extract valuable minerals from ores, raised €12M in funding.

The round was led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures-Europe.

The company intends to use the funds to continue to develop its pulsed-power technology.

As a collaborative effort between BEV-E, founded by Bill Gates, and I-Pulse, founded by Robert Friedland and Laurent Frescaline, I-ROX is a developer of pulsed-power technology. The company seeks to demonstrate that short, high intensity bursts of energy delivered using pulsed-power technology can quickly and efficiently shatter rocks and mineral ores. The pulsed power applications I-ROX is developing could reduce the substantial time, energy usage and carbon emissions currently generated from mineral exploration. At present, comminution of rock and mineral ores is completed through mechanical crushing and grinding, whereby the material is reduced to progressively smaller sizes for processing. This crushing and grinding process is the single most energy-intensive and expensive aspect of the entire mining process.

The company is currently located at I -Cube Research, a Toulouse-based company of 100 people belonging to the I-Pulse group, which develops High Pulsed Power (HPP) industrial applications. I-Pulse is a world leader in the field, relying on large-scale scientific and technical developments to develop these breakthrough technologies.
