According to reports, Google (Alphabet, Inc., (GOOGL.O) is in talks to buy Mandiant (MNDT.O), a Reston, VA-based cybersecurity company.

Founded in 2004 and led by CEO Kevin Mandia, Mandiant is a cyber security company enabling Fortune 100 companies and governments around the world to identify and defend against some of the most high-profile cyber security breaches based on the right combination of expertise, intelligence, and adaptive technology. The Mandiant Advantage SaaS platform scales frontline experience and threat intelligence to deliver a range of dynamic cyber defense solutions. Its approach helps organizations develop more effective and efficient cyber security programs and instills confidence in their readiness to defend against and respond to cyber threats.

The acquisition could enable Google to expand its cloud computing business, and compete with Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), which is also reportedly interested in buying the company.

The company became a standalone entity again in 2021 when its products business was sold by FireEye, Inc. (NASDAQ: FEYE) to a consortium led by Symphony Technology Group (STG) in an all-cash transaction for $1.2 billion. FireEye had bought the company in 2013.
