Grockit Raises Funding

Grockit, a San Francisco, CA-based social learning company, has raised an undisclosed amount of funding.

The round was led by nonfiction media company Discovery Communications (Nasdaq: DISCA, DISCB, DISCK), with participation from Summit Group, and existing investors Atlas Venture, Benchmark Capital, Integral Capital Partners and GSV Capital Corp.

The company intends to use the proceeds to expand the reach of – and further develop – the Learnist platform, which has been re-designed with a focus on highlighting its community of experts, including Bobby Chang, founder of In-Case, Clark Scheffy, founder of Ideo, and Eric Ries, the author of The Lean Startup. The Learnist apps for iPhone and iPad – launched in September 2012 – have also been updated, and now enable users to create and add content to the platform, which was launched in May 2012 to encourage people to learn from and teach each other about a wide range of academic and casual learning topics. It enables users to curate digital and online resources into a media-rich board, called a Learn Board, and to share their knowledge.

Founded in 2007 by Farb Nivi and led by Roy Gilbert, CEO, Grockit provides a social learning platform, which allows users to prepare for the ACT, SAT, GRE, LSAT & GMAT, create a study group with friends, handle content, improve skills and project scores.

In addition to the investment, the relationship with Discovery includes shared technology, and the possibility to explore marketing, distribution and promotion opportunities with Learnist.
