Semprius, Inc., a Durham, NC-based company commercializing a process for printing high-performance semiconductors on any substrate, including glass, plastic and other semiconductor materials, has received a strategic investment of $1.5m from X-FAB Semiconductor Foundries AG, an analog/mixed-signal semiconductor foundry.
In addition, under a development agreement signed by the two companies, X-FAB will provide turnkey silicon wafer fabrication for Semprius’ customers.
X-FAB is an analog/mixed-signal foundry group manufacturing silicon wafers for analog-digital integrated circuits (mixed-signal ICs). The company operates wafer production facilities in Erfurt and Dresden (Germany), Lubbock, Texas (US) and Kuching, Sarawak (Malaysia) and employs approximately 2,500 people worldwide.
Wafers are manufactured based on advanced modular complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and BIpolarCMOS processes with technologies ranging from 1.0 to 0.18 micrometers, for applications primarily in the automotive, communications, consumer and industrial sectors.
As explained by Joe Carr, President and CEO of Semprius, “The strategic relationship with X-FAB will provide our customers with ready access to world-class semiconductor fabrication in all aspects, from a Semprius-certified design kit to fully warranted wafer delivery.
“We are delighted to be working with such a strong technology and service-focused partner”.
Commenting on the agreement, Hans-Juergen Straub, CEO of X-FAB, added: “Semprius’ expertise and innovative intellectual property position it as a key driver in the field of printed electronics.
“Its advanced technology opens a multitude of new markets for our foundry business, and we foresee many areas of potential cooperation with Semprius”.
