Plain Vanilla Corp., a San Francisco and Reykjavik, Iceland-based developer of a social trivia platform, raised $2.4m in Series A funding.
The round, which follows a $1.2m seed funding raised in the summer of 2012, was led by Greycroft Partners, Tencent, IDG ventures and BOLDStart Ventures, with participation from a number of angels and funds including CrunchFund, Mesa Global, David Helgason, CEO of Unity3D and Brandon J. Beck, CEO of Riot Games.
The company intends to use the capital to accelerate the development of QuizUp, as well as to expand content acquisition and presence in new markets such as Asia.
Founded by CEO Thor Fridriksson, Plain Vanilla is developing QuizUp, a multiplatform and real-time social trivia engine, which allows users to compete head-to-head in real time between different mobile devices.
In conjunction with the funding, Ellie Wheeler from Greycroft Partners and David Helgason of Unity3D will join the company’s Board of Directors.
