GigaCrop Raises $4.5M Pre-Seed Funding

GigaCrop, a Berkeley, CA-based plant biology company, raised $4.5M in Pre-Seed funding.

The round was led by Playground Global and Juniper Ventures.

The company intends to use the funds to expand operations and its development efforts.

Led by CEO and Founder Chris Eiben, GigaCrop is a plant biology company that uses machine learning, enzyme engineering and plant science to boost crop yield and drought tolerance.

Commenting on the news Chris Eiben said: “Farmers, and the plants they grow, support a robust and self-sufficient biomanufacturing economy. GigaCrop is developing crops to supply the additional yield needed to massively scale this sector, and benefit everyone in the process.”

The company has also raised more than $2.7m in grants from ARPA-E, the U.S. DOE, and the Grantham Foundation.
