Contactile, a Sydney, Australia-based robotic technology company, raised US$2.5M in Seed funding.

The round was led by True Ventures with participation from Flying Fox Ventures, Radar Ventures and UNSW Founders.

The company intends to use the funds to pursue further research and product development in addition to executing a number of pilots to demonstrate the value of tactile sensing.

Led by CEO Dr. Heba Khamis, CTO Benjamin Xia, and Associate Professor Stephen Redmond, Contactile is advancing tactile sensors that give robots a human sense of touch and enable robotic dexterity. The technology – developed at UNSW Sydney with initial funding support from the Australian Research Council and US Office of Naval Research Global – enables robotic grippers to autonomously handle objects never before encountered and to perform more complex manipulation through touch sensor feedback, allowing robots to use their ‘hands’ in a more flexible, versatile way.

The company is looking to solve both short-term and long-term problems – from warehouse fulfillment – e.g., autonomous gripping of thousands of unique products in a grocery store – to space applications – e.g., versatile robots for building infrastructure on planets other than Earth.
