Sicona Battery Technologies Raises $3.7M in Pre-Series A Funding

Sicona Battery Technologies Pty Ltd, a Sidney, Australia-based battery materials technology company, raised AU$3.7m in a pre-Series A funding round.

The round was led by Artesian and Riverstone Ventures, an affiliate of Riverstone Holdings with participation from Chaos Ventures, Bandera Capital, SDGx Ventures, and several Australian climate-tech investors and global battery materials specialists.

The company intends to use the funds to expand and deploy commercial-scale production plants in Europe and North America.

Founded in June 2019 by Christiaan Jordaan, and Andrew Minett, Sicona is developing next-generation battery technology used in the anodes (negative electrodes) of lithium-ion (“Li-ion”) batteries that enables electric mobility and storage of renewable energy.

The company is commercializing innovative silicon-graphite composite battery anode and binder process technology and materials, developed over the last ten years at the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM) at the University of Wollongong.
