Protera, a Santiago, Chile-based AI-driven startup designing and developing new proteins to enable a wide range of natural and sustainable solutions, closed a $5.6m Series A financing.
The round was led by Sofinnova Partners, with participaiton from SOSV. In conjunction with the funding, Joško Bobanović, Partner at Sofinnova Partners, will join Protera’s board of directors.
The company intends to use the funds to advance its AI-driven design and commercialize new proteins to enable sustainable solutions.
Co-founded in 2015 by Leonardo Álvarez, CEO, and Francia Navarrete, Chief Operations Officer, Protera uses a proprietary deep learning algorithm, MADI™, that predicts high value, patentable protein products and enzymes with speed.
The company is about to begin pilot trials with multinational food companies to deploy a clean-label protein that extends shelf-life and replaces chemically derived ingredients. In 2016, Protera joined IndieBio, a biology-focused accelerator in Silicon Valley.
