Toronto executive Shane Dubin has spent the last 19 years of his career working in the financial services industry. He currently serves as Senior Vice President, Investment Advisor and Portfolio Manager at Canaccord Genuity, having joined Canaccord Genuity in April 2018.

Shane answered our questions about his background in wealth management, including his experience in wealth management, his services and areas of expertise, and his aspirations for the future.

First, can you tell us a bit more about you and your background?

Shane Dubin: Sure. I have been in the wealth management industry for a little over two decades, working with my clients to uncover every available solution to ensure a prosperous financial future. I developed a passion for finance and wealth management early on while studying at York University in Toronto. In March 2000, I accepted my first position with Scotia McLeod and eventually became the firm’s Senior Wealth Advisor and Associate Portfolio Manager. I was with Scotia McLeod for 18 years before joining Canaccord Genuity in 2018. Today, I continue to grow my business, Dubin Wealth Management, under the umbrella of Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management.

What type of services do you offer your clients at Dubin Wealth Management?

Shane Dubin: Dubin Wealth Management offers clients the structure and support of a large financial institution along with an independent, personal and client-focused service. We focus on areas of expertise that include Family Wealth Planning, Financial Planning, Investment Management, Private Banking, Estate and Trust Services, Insurance Planning and Business Transition Planning.

What, in your view, are the advantages of hiring an Investment Advisor to plan your financial future?

Shane Dubin: A professional advisor can help you establish and implement the right investment strategy for your financial future based on your goals, risk tolerance, responsibilities and values. They can also assist you with managing your retirement plan so you have the best chance of achieving your savings goals. Seeking advice from an investment manager can make your life easier, save you a lot of money, and help you reach your financial goals sooner. No matter how much information is available online, your financial situation is bound to be unique, and it can be helpful to get professional advice.

What would your advice be to an investor who is hesitant to work with a financial advisor?

Shane Dubin: One reason many investors are hesitant to work with a financial advisor is they feel their financial life is too simple to justify seeking the advisement of a professional. To this I would say; no two financial situations are exactly alike. Even the most basic of situations can mean a wealth of planning opportunities for an investor. Just as the saying goes, “you don’t know what you don’t know”, it isn’t always readily apparent what financial decisions were made up to this point, what changes to consider now, and what preventative planning should be done today.

What’s your investment philosophy?

Shane Dubin: As an advisor, I tailor advice to you based on your needs, giving you insight on the best ways to invest. This way, you can be on the lookout for strategies that are too aggressive, too conservative, or too complicated for your own personal needs.

You live by a people-first philosophy. Why is the input from your colleagues and clients so valuable?

Shane Dubin: I pride myself on a combination of accountability, proactivity and genuine concern for my clients. When it comes to handling other people’s money, you have to show that you are dedicated and trustworthy, especially when you are dealing with clients and families who have complex financial situations. I’m truly inspired by each of my clients, and I take pleasure in helping them get to where they need to be financially.
