Checkerspot Closes $5M Seed Financing

Checkerspot Inc., a Berkeley, Calif.-based materials innovation company, closed an over $5m seed financing.

The round was led by KdT Ventures, with participation from Viking Global Investors, Refactor Capital, Sahsen Ventures and Godfrey Capital, as well as DIC Corporation as part of its recently announced Joint Development Agreement with Checkerspot. Cain McClary, general partner of KdT Ventures, will be joining the board of directors along with David Greenwood, who also participated in the financing and has worked with the company as an advisor since 2016.

The company intends to use the funds to continue to innovate around its platform to penetrate into more and more applications areas.

Led by Charles Dimmler, CEO and co-founder, and Scott Franklin, CSO and co-founder, Checkerspot provides an innovation platform that integrates biology, chemistry and fabrication to enable the design – at a molecular level – of new materials. Initial materials focus has been on materials derived from novel triglycerides (oils) from microalgae.
Through applications development, the company prototypes and iterates on specific product embodiments by engaging directly with product users and partnering with socially responsible corporations.

Checkerspot is a graduate of the Illumina Accelerator program.
