Luna DNA Raises $4M in Total Funding

Luna DNA, a Solana Beach, California-based community-owned genomic and medical research database, raised further funding.

Backers included Illumina Ventures, Arch Venture Partners, Bridgelink Capital and Hemisphere Ventures and Dr. Aristides Patrinos, a former leader of the Human Genome Project and current advisor to Luna DNA. This additional financing brings the company’s total to-date funding to $4m. Existing individual investors included Dr. David R. Walt, co-founder of and advisor to Illumina, and Gavin Saitowitz, CEO and co-founder of Prelude Capital.

The company intends to use the funds to continue to expand operations and develop the platform.

Founded by Dawn Barry, president, as a Public Benefit Corporation, Luna enables people to share their health data for medical research for the greater good of the community. Its community-owned approach enables members to be awarded shares of ownership in exchange for their DNA and other medical record contributions. Earnings from medical discoveries are passed through to the shareholders.
