Pocket Gems Raises $90m in Funding

Pocket Gems, a San Francisco, CA-based developer of original mobile games and interactive entertainment, raised $90m in funding.

Tencent made this additional investment. Following the round, Pocket Gems will continue to operate independently, with Tencent and Sequoia Capital both remaining as minority investors.

The company intends to use the funds to support major expansions for the Episode and War Dragons communities, as well as the upcoming launch of a new studio building 3D synchronous multiplayer mobile games for hardcore gamers. Following several years of development, Pocket Gems is planning to launch the new studio and its first title later this year.

Founded in 2009 and led by Ben Liu, CEO, Pocket Gems is a developer of original mobile games and interactive entertainment. The company’s growth comes from its strategy of advancing and releasing new categories of games and interactive entertainment with Episode, a large mobile interactive storytelling platform with over 55,000 stories and 3 billion episodes viewed, and War Dragons, a synchronous multiplayer 3D game on mobile built on its proprietary Mantis graphics engine. Pocket Gems’ titles have been downloaded more than 300 million times across iOS and Android.
The team has 200 people.
