d.light Raises $7.5M in Debt Financing

d.lightd.light, a San Francisco, CA, Nairobi, Kenya, and New Delhi, India-based developer of connected products for off-grid households and small businesses, secured $7.5m in debt financing.

The funding came from impact investment manager Developing World Markets.

The company, which has recently raised $22.5m in Series D funding, intends to use the capital to expand its existing solar lantern and home system solutions, and to bring new products to market, including a solar-powered TV.

Founded in 2007 as a for-profit social enterprise and led by CEO Ned Tozun, d.light manufactures and distributes solar lighting and power products designed to serve the more than 2 billion people globally without access to reliable electricity.  It provides solar home systems and is advancing new products including solar-powered appliances, such as TVs. It is now selling hundreds of thousands of units per month, operating five distribution hubs in East Africa, West Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and the United States.
