CL_LogoCockroach Labs, the New York City-based company behind CockroachDB, an open source, scalable SQL database, raised $20m in Series A1 round of funding.

The round was led by Index Ventures.

The company will use the funds to continue to expand operations.

Founded in 2015 by Spencer Kimball, CEO, Ben Darnell and Peter Mattis, Cockroach is advancing CockroachDB, a distributed relational database that enables developers to build scalable applications. It combines SQL functionality with horizontal scalability common to NoSQL offerings, survives disk, machine, rack, and datacenter failures with minimal latency disruption and no manual intervention, supports ACID transactions and provides an SQL API for structuring, manipulating, and querying data.
