New Frontier Foods Inc., a Burlingame, CA-based maker of seaweed chips, raised $1.7m in its first round of seed funding.
Backers included current and former executives at ConAgra, Starbucks, Pepsico, Hershey’s (Scharffen Berger), Boulder Canyon Natural Foods and Facebook.
The company, which also raised additional funds through CircleUp, an online platform that helps connect investors with consumer brands.
Founded by Mike Shim, Robert Mock and Michael Buckley, New Frontier Foods makes Ocean’s Halo The Seaweed Chip, a chip made from sustainably harvested seaweed. They are baked and packed with vitamins and minerals, with no GMOs, trans fats, MSG, or artificial ingredients, and available online and at select retailers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
It will roll out nationally over the coming months.
