NewsWhip Raises $1.1M

NewsWhip, a Dublin, Ireland-based provider of a social breaking news aggregator, raised $1.1m in seed funding.

Backers included Hal Philipp of Meridian Growth Capital and Shane Naughton of Inundata, as well as new investors AIB Seed Capital Fund (managed by Dublin BIC), Enterprise Ireland, and angel investor and entrepreneur Hannes Smarason, former CEO of Icelandair, and CBO of deCODE.

The company intends to use the funds to continue to develop Spike, update NewsWhip.com, and their Android and iPhone apps. NewsWhip, is also opening an office in NYC, where sales and communications people are being hired.

Founded by Paul Quigley and Andrew Mullaney, NewsWhip has developed technology to track all the news published by about 5,000 English-language sources –about 60,000 news stories each day. It gathers social data for each story – how many shares, likes, tweets and comments it has – at repeated intervals, building a live picture of how popular it is. Spike, its story-finding tool, allows journalists, editors, producers, and marketers to find relevant stories on social networks.
The company currently serves newsrooms and freelancers, small publishers, agencies, and brands focused on content marketing in 12 countries.
