Defense.net Raises $9.5M in Funding

Defense.net, a Belmont, CA-based company designed to mitigate Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, raised $9.5m in funding.

The round was led by Bessemer Venture Partners. In conjunction with the funding, David Cowan, a partner of Bessemer and the co-founder of VeriSign, joined Defense.net’s board, along with Jay Adelson who has created companies including Equinix, Digg, Revision3, SimpleGeo and Opsmatic.

Founded in December 2012 by Barrett Lyon, CTO, Joe Daly, VP of Network Operations, and Chris Risley, CEO, Defense.net provides businesses and organizations with tools to protect against the new generation of massive and sophisticated DDoS attacks while delivering the highest levels of Internet application performance. The company has been operating in stealth mode to date to build a DDoS defense network scaled and architected for the protection of today’s critical infrastructure.

Defense.net was incubated in the Menlo Park office of Bessemer Venture Partners.
