FreedomPop Closes $5M Series A1 Funding

FreedomPop, a Los Angeles, CA-based free internet provider, closed an additional $5m in Series A1 funding.

Backers include existing investors Mangrove Capital, DCM, and Skype Founder Niklas Zennstom’s Atomico.

The company intends to use the funds to growing the user base and increase its smartphone inventory ahead of the Android phone launch in the coming months.

Founded in 2011 and led by Stephen Stokols, CEO, FreedomPop offers 500MB of free high speed internet per month (4G data), unlimited texting, and 200 free anytime voice minutes each month. Its high speed wireless internet service runs on Clearwire’s 4G WiMax network and will expand to include Sprint’s 4G LTE network in 2013.

In addtion to the funding, the company also announced that Nextel Co-Founder and telecom veteran Chris Rogers joined as a board advisor.
