Piston Cloud Computing Raises $8M in Series B Funding

Piston Cloud Computing Inc., a San Francisco, CA-based enterprise OpenStack company, raised $8m in a Series B funding.

Backers included Cisco Systems, Data Collective, Swisscom Ventures, Divergent Ventures, Hummer Winblad and True Ventures.

The company, which had raised $4.5m in Series A round in July 2011 (read here), intends to use the capital for product development and customer base expansion.

Founded in early 2011 and led by CEO Jim Morrisroe, Piston Cloud Computing delivers a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution built on OpenStack for building, scaling and managing a private Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud on bare-metal, converged commodity hardware. The software is offered via an exclusive licensing agreement with virtualization optimization company Gridcentric. It integrates with Cloud Foundry, the open source Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering, that allows Cloud Foundry PaaS to run on OpenStack and provides support for three automation solutions – Opscode, Puppet Labs and RightScale – enabling the company’s customers to automate the tasks necessary to manage applications within their private clouds.
