Wikia Raises Over $10M in Series C Funding

Wikia, a San Francisco, CA-based collaborative media company which is home to several online large social communities, has closed over $10m in Series C funding.

The round was led by Institutional Venture Partners, with participation from existing investors Bessemer Ventures Partners and Amazon.com.

The company, which has now raised $25m since inception, intends to use the funding accelerate its mobile and video initiatives, drive continued community and user growth, and evaluate strategic acquisitions.

Launched in 2006 by founders Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley and led by Craig Palmer, CEO, Wikia provides people with a collaborative media platform to contribute to the assembly of original bodies of multi-media content around subjects they love. It allows users to form new communities around any subject or participate in over 250,000 existing communities by reading or contributing new content. Examples include its video game (www.wikia.com/videogames) entertainment (www.wikia.com/entertainment) and lifestyle (www.wikia.com/lifestyle) verticals.
In 2013, the company plans to expand its platform and launch an innovative set of integrated mobile, tablet and video capabilities that will enable users to simultaneously engage with content and contribute to communities across multiple screens.
