Vicarious Raises $15M in Series A Financing


Vicarious, a Union City, CA-based artificial intelligence research company, has raised $15m in Series A financing.

The round was led by Good Ventures LLC, an investment firm founded by Asana co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, with participation from Founders Fund, Open Field Capital, and angel investors Steve Brown and Zarco Investment Group.

Co-founded in February 2010 by Dr. Dileep George and D. Scott Phoenix Vicarious uses the computational principles of the brain to build software designed to think and learn like a human. Leveraging a new computational paradigm called the Recursive Cortical Network™, The company has developed a visual perception system that interprets the contents of photographs and videos in a manner similar to humans.
The research at Vicarious is expected to have applications for robotics, medical image analysis, image and video search, and many other fields.

In conjunction with the funding, Mr. Moskovitz, who will be joining Vicarious’s board of directors.
