Rovio, an Espoo, Finland-based entertainment media company and the creator of Angry Birds, closed a $42m Series A funding.
The round was co-led by Accel Partners and Atomico Ventures, with participation from Felicis Ventures. Niklas Zennström of Atomico Ventures, will be joining the board of Rovio.
The company intends to use the funds to facilitate its strategic expansion. Rovio has plans to increase its reach internationally, and across markets including mobile, social media and other platforms, and via merchandising and media production and partnerships.
Currently, Angry Birds is played by 40 million monthly active users.
Founded in 2003 by CEO Mikael Hed, Rovio has 50 employees in Espoo.
