SOPHIA Search Closes $1.2M Seed Funding Round

SOPHIA Search Limited, a Belfast, Ireland, UK, based provider of enterprise search and discovery solutions, has closed a $1.2m seed funding round.
The round was led by a newly formed Belfast-based new angel syndicate, Volcano, with participation from the HALO EIS fund, which is managed by Javelin Ventures, London.
The funds will be invested in product development, expansion of sales channel, and marketing the company’s solution globally, with a particular attention for the U.S. market, where it serves clients such as IBM and Accelrys.
The company uses a patented Contextual Discovery Engine (CDE) that is powered by a linguistic model called semiotics, to understand meaning and identify intrinsic terms, phrases and relationships in content. This enables organizations to search, extract, de-duplicate and eliminate redundancy of content to minimize compliance risk and reduce the cost of storing and managing enterprise information.
Founded in 2007 as a result of an R&D collaboration between the University of Ulster in the UK and the State University of St. Petersburg in Russia, Sophia currently operates offices in Boston, MA.
