UK, Berwick Incubator Receives European Funds to Better Assist Small Businesses

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2007-13 half funded a business start up initiative aimed to bring new jobs and commercial opportunities to Berwick, Northumberland.
Berwick Workspace, a joint project between Northumberland County Council and Berwick upon Tweed Borough Council, is running a £269,000 project to assist 37 small businesses and create 35 new jobs from its incubator units in the rural seaside town.
The £134,500 financing from ERDF is being matched by funding from both the regional development agency, One North East, and the council. The funding will support the growth of knowledge-based companies by providing one to one support through the Tyneside Economic Development Company Ltd (TEDCO), which will provide information and advice on every aspect of running a business including start-up, survival success and growth strategies for predominantly rural areas. TEDCO will also deliver specialist support for the acquisition of new business processes and technologies to increase productivity and encourage efficient use of energy and low carbon solutions.
