Picnic Raises €250M in Funding

picnicPicnic, an Amersfoort, The Netherlands-based online supermarket company, raised €250m in funding.

The round was comprised of:
– a €50m loan from the Dutch bank ABN AMRO, and
– investments from NPM Capital, Hoyberg, Kruidvat and Finci.

The company intends to use the funds to build its new 42,000 square metre automated distribution centre in Utrecht, which will replace the existing ones.

Founded in 2015 by entrepreneurs Joris Beckers, Frederik Nieuwenhuys, Michiel Muller and Bas Verheijen, later joined by Gerard Scheij, Picnic is an online supermarket that delivers groceries for free to people which buy them via the mobile app, available for Android and iOS. At Picnic, users can order all groceries within a few minutes including toilet paper, soft drinks, chips, ice cream, organic eggs, tender steak and fresh vegetables.
The company, which grants that groceries are always fresh and delivered in 100% electric cars, will continue to use its existing seven distribution centres, until the new automated one will be ready in two years.
