Hammerhead, a NYC-based maker of a smart operating system for bikes, raised $4.2M in seed funding.
The round was led by Primary Ventures and KB Partners with participation from Courtside Ventures, Maveron, Drummond Road Capital, Robin Thurston (MapMyFitness co-founder) and Andy Ording (Zipp CEO). In conjunction with the funding, Primary’s Steve Schlafman and KB’s Keith Bank joined Hammerhead’s board.
The company intends to use the funds to continue to expand its business reach.
Led by founder and CEO Piet Morgan, co-founder and SVP Product Laurence Wattrus, and co-founder and SVP Software Raveen Beemsingh, Hammerhead provides Karoo, a cycling computer that augments the experience with GPS navigation and real-time ride data. Users can connect sensors via ANT+ or Bluetooth to track heart rate, cadence, and power output with clear numbers or graphs. The product runs on an Android operating system and has frequent software updates. The company also plans to license the software to bike manufacturers and other partners.
