Orbital Insight Raises $50M in Series C Funding

Orbital Insight, a Mountain View, CA-based geospatial analytics and software company, closed a $50m Series C round of funding.

The round, which brought total funding to $78.7m, was led by existing investor Sequoia Capital, with participation from new investors Envision Ventures, Balyasny Asset Management, Geodesic Capital, Itochu Corporation and Intellectus Partners as well as previous investors GV, Lux Capital, and CME Ventures.

The company intends to use the funds to expand its portfolio of analytic products and grow its global strategic partnerships and sales presence in key international markets, and hire new people in its engineering, data science, design and sales teams.

Led by CEO and founder Dr. James Crawford, Orbital Insight operates large-scale analysis of satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery partnering with satellite operators, including Airbus, DigitalGlobe, ImageSat, MDA, Planet and Urthecast, to gain access to vast amounts of imagery. It then applies machine learning and computer vision to these images to count and measure objects like cars, agricultural fields, buildings and more to provide an accurate and near real-time understanding of the planet.
Clients include financial services firms, Global 500 companies, several U.S. government agencies and global non-profit organizations.
