DataKind Raises $2M in Funding

dkDataKind, a New York City-based nonprofit that connects data science and social sector experts, raised $2m in funding.

Existing backer Omidyar Network made the investment.

The company will use the funds to scale its services, to test new approaches using predictive analytics, providing a better understanding of data’s potential to predict and identify issues of financial transparency and fiscal governance.

Led by Jake Porway, founder and executive director, DataKind connects data science and social sector experts to address critical humanitarian problems around the world including education, poverty, health, human rights, and the environment.
Its global community of over 12,000 data science volunteers and social innovators who have delivered over $14m in pro bono services to organizations worldwide to date.
DataKind, which also provides insights to Omidyar’s portfolio of companies and organizations focused on improving the relationship between citizens and their governments, has chapters in Bangalore, Dublin, San Francisco, Singapore, the UK and Washington, D.C.
