Cinematic Virtual Reality Startup Kite & Lightning Raises $2.5M in Seed Funding

kite-and-lightningKite & Lightning, a Los Angeles, CA-based cinematic virtual reality (VR) startup, raised $2.5m in seed funding.

The round was led by Raine Ventures with participation from Courtside Ventures, Comcast Ventures Catalyst Fund, Social Capital, Outpost Capital, Boost VC, & Jason Rosenthal, CEO of Lytro.

The company intends to use the funds to expand its team to create Bebylon Battle Royale* and expand the universe around its core three VR pillars: gaming, social & story.

Led by Ikrima Elhassan, co-founder and CEO, Kite & Lightning blends gaming, social and story to create immersive computer-generated (CG) worlds that meld cinematic storytelling with interactive gaming. Recent projects include a 4D VR experience for NBC’s “The Voice” featuring Pharrell Williams, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, & Gwen Stefani; and Lionsgate’s first VR narrative, a hybrid live action and CG experience starring Kate Winslet, Mekhi Phifer and Miles Teller.

*Bebylon Battle Royale is a world built around competitive battle arenas where immortal babies fight one another in front of a live VR spectator audience. Players can also venture outside of the arenas to socialize, experience shows, and take virtual rides.
