Bolt Threads Raises $50M in Series C Funding

boltthreadsBolt Threads, an Emeryville, Calif.-based biotechnology company creating next generation high performance fabrics, raised $50m in Series C financing.

The round was led by existing investor Formation 8 with participation from new investors Nan Fung, a business conglomerate based in Hong Kong, and Innovation Endeavors and existing investors Alafi Capital, East West Capital, Foundation Capital and Founders Fund.

The company will use the funds to produce its Engineered Silk™ protein at large scale, and move into yarn manufacturing.

Co-founded in 2009 by CEO Dan Widmaier, Chief Scientific Officer David Breslauer, and Vice President of Operations Ethan Mirsky, Bolt Threads is producing Engineered Silk™ made wholly of natural proteins, which aims to transform the textiles market, turning renewable raw materials into products.
