Axiom Zen Acquires Hammer & Tusk

az-logoAxiom Zen, a San Francisco-based venture studio which specializes in new venture creation, building technology products and companies, acquired Hammer & Tusk, a Canadian news source on virtual and augmented reality.

The amount of the deal was not disclosed.

Founded by game industry veteran Mack Flavelle, Hammer & Tusk is a news destination focused around virtual and augmented reality which operates a A WEEKLY weekly curation delivered to readers’ inbox every friday and is involved in an experimental variety show, invite-only events, a podcast, and a consulting arm.
Prior to entering the world of VR and AR, Flavelle was the CEO of gaming outfit Compass Engine (acquired by East Side Games), and served as VP of Marketing at Tapstream (a marketing suite for mobile apps used by Microsoft, Rosetta Stone, and Twitch). He also serves as advisor to CareLedger, a Y Combinator-backed digital health startup.

Following the acquisition, Hammer & Tusk will continue to operate as an independent entity run by its founder, Mack Flavelle, and will leverage Axiom Zen’s design, engineering, and product teams to continue to grow.

Led by founder Roham Gharegozlou, Axiom Zen is a venture studio that builds technology prototypes, products, and companies, whose work spans diverse verticals – including SaaS & enterprise software (ZenHub); talent/recruiting (Talera); and logistics/delivery (Routific).
Gharegozlou is an entrepreneur, angel investor, and former venture capitalist. Prior to founding Axiom Zen, he sourced innovative startups with the Rising Tide Fund as a partner focused on seed-stage investments, worked with Newbury Ventures, a tech venture fund based in Redwood Shores. His angel investment portfolio includes customer communication platform provider Intercom and sales technology platform Tout, among others.
