Jibo, the Boston, Massachusetts-based creator of a family robot for the connected home, raised $25.3m in Series A financing.

The round was led by RRE Ventures with participation from existing investors CRV, Fairhaven and Osage University Partners and new investors Flybridge Capital Partners, Two Sigma Ventures, Formation 8, Samsung Ventures and several angels.

Founded in 2012 by CSO Cynthia Breazeal and led by CEO Steve Chambers, Jibo has developed an open social robotics platform featuring such skills as attentive companion, family helper and communications hub.

The company intends to use the funds to fulfill its Indiegogo campaign (which raised $2.3M with more than 5,000 people funding the project) and to build the first batch of consumer-ready Jibos and beyond, expand its workforce seven-fold, with an emphasis on software, hardware and cloud development, to partner with third-party manufacturers to speed the development of advanced prototypes and seed simulator units, then full developer unit Jibos with SDKs, to the developer community to drive engagement and expand the portfolio of Jibo Skills.
