VC Backed Urlist Shuts Down

urlistUrlist, a Milan, Italy-based social platform for organizing, sharing and discovering links, is shutting down.

The company was backed by Connect Ventures (read here).

Founded in 2011 by CEO Alberto Granzotto, Stefano Cavallari and Valentina Montagna, Urlist will be discontinued on December 31, 2014 at 1:00PM UTC.

Today, Granzotto frankly explained the reasons of the close:

We began our journey with a specific vision in our mind: To give to our users the best and easiest tool to categorize and share the information they find in the Internet. Along the way, we improved our service to let you publish and discover new links. We did it because we’re list maniacs and Internet lovers eager for knowledge. We love the Web and believe that every Internet user is an expert on something. We wanted to give a voice to every one of you. In the past couple of years together, we collected more than 380,000 links and created over 40,000 lists, curating content from “Irish Genealogy” to “JavaScript Frameworks”, “Open Data” to “Best Cat Videos”. The story ends here. We didn’t succeed in creating a sustainable platform for links and social bookmarking, but we believe this challenge can be met some day. For now, however, we’d like to say goodbye to everyone the best way we can.

The entrepreneur also announced that they plan to publish all the source code of Urlist. “We truly believe in open source, and we want to share with the community the code we wrote during the last years“, he said.

It will be available at https://github.com/urlist from Jan 1, 2015.
