Clef Secures $1.6M in Seed Funding

clefClef, an Oakland, Calif.-based provider of technology for secure login, secured $1.6m in seed funding.

Backers included Morado Ventures and angel investors across healthcare, financial services, and Bitcoin.

Led by Brennen Byrne, co-founder and CEO, Clef provides a two-factor authentication solution without the passwords. It uses the phone’s camera to sync a proprietary animation called the Clef Wave while in the background, Clef is powered by a public key infrastructure similar to the system that powers Bitcoin wallets. The distributed network ensures that no secure secrets are passed around or stored in database.

The application works on any iOS or Android device, and is available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play. In WordPress, the Clef plugin has more than 135,000 downloads.
