Newsela Raises $4.1M in Series A Funding

newselaNewsela, a New York-based education technology startup, raised $4.1m in Series A funding.

The round was led by Owl Ventures with participation from The Knight Foundation and a number of individual investors, including Ron Beller and Jennifer Moses, Shawn and Brook Byers, Joannie and David Fischer and Umang Gupta.

The company intends to use the funds to expand its content coverage in areas such as sports and science, produce curriculum materials for teachers and schools, add features for richer feedback to students and to analyze students’ and teachers’ use of the platform to develop more effective learning tools.

Launched in 2013 by CEO Matthew Gross, Newsela publishes daily news articles at five reading levels to engage students in grades 3-12 in several topics such as immigration, diplomacy, drones and animal extinction and provides teachers with new tools to instruct reading across a range of abilities and subject areas.
Since the launch, Newsela articles have been read more than 5 million times by students from more than 80 countries.
