Orange Silicon Valley Releases Report about Unicorns

The Unicorn ReportOrange Silicon Valley has released a new report called “Unicorns, Startups, and Giants: The New Billion Dollar Dynamics of the Digital Landscape“.

The document shows that tech “Unicorns”, billion-dollar startups, “are the new engines of disruption reshaping the competitive landscape“.
It charts over 60 Unicorn companies across seven dominant sectors of technology (big data, cloud, enterprise, e-commerce, mobile, media, and social networking) that collectively account for $232bn in market value and highlights that over 70% of them are focused on transforming the enterprise with digital technologies. Historically rare, Unicorns saw a 67% increase in the number of valuations set at $1 billion or more through growth-stage funding, public IPO’s, or corporate exits.

According to the report, Internet-native Giants use these Unicorns to test innovations and markets with new offerings in areas adjacent to them. They often invest in and acquire Unicorns in order to grow their business further into these adjacencies (e.g. Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp).

The research also offers a map of sector opportunities for what it calls “incumbents” to better align with digital transformation and shares a macro analysis of six broad currents that will further transform the landscape to 2020.
