Academia.edu Acquires Plasmyd

Academia.edu, a San Francisco, CA-based online community of scientists, acquired Plasmyd, a peer review and discussion platform for papers.

The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.

Launched in 2008 by Richard Price, CEO, Academia.edu is a large online community for academics to share research papers. The company aims aims to get every science PDF ever written on the internet, accessible for free, and to bring scientific research into the 21st century by building a better peer review system around that research.  The acquisition will allow Academia.edu to build a more reliable validation system around research by using Plasmyd’s experience in fostering peer review online.
Plasmyd’s co-founders Adnan Akil and Kevin Wu will join the company.

Academia.edu has over 8 million unique visitors a month and 1,629,811 papers downloaded. To date, the company has raised $17.7m from Khosla Ventures, Spark Capital, True Ventures, and other angels.
