Layer, a San Francisco, CA-based developer of an open communications platform to add messaging, voice, and video calling tools to mobile (and soon web) products, raised $1.5m in seed funding.

The company intends to use the funds to continue to develop the platformk and is hiring mobile engineers, web engineers, security and cryptography specialists.
Founded at the beginning of 2013 by Tomaž Štolfa and Ron Palmeri, Layer allows developers to build messaging, voice and video capabilities into their app in minutes, just adding some lines of code, without worrying about the infrastructure.
The company is the recent winner of TechCrunch Disrupt SF Startup Battlefield 2013.
