uSpeak Raises €500K in Funding


uSpeak, a Madrid, Spain-based provider of a mobile application to learn Spanish, raised €500k in funding.

Backers included Carlos Dexeus, Fernando Fiksman, Philippe Dillmann and Great Oaks.

The company intends to use the capital to expand to other platforms and hire new people.

Co-founded in 2011 by Andrés Burdett and Jamie Dick-Cleland, uSpeak provides iPhone and iPad apps that allow users to grow their Spanish vocabulary by playing games adapting to and evolving with them as they learn. The solution provides language learners with games, a new way of interacting with the words users are learning, a system that generates learning paths according based on customized level and interests, and a Competence Based Repetition Algorithm.
The company is also led by John Stockdale (CTO), a former Facebook Software Engineer.
