DuckDuckGo Raises First Funding

DuckDuckGo, a Valley Forge, Pennsylvania-based alternative search engine company, has raised its first round of funding.

The investment was led by Union Square Ventures, with participation from Scott Banister, Jim Young, Jeff Miller, Joshua Schachter, Kal Vapuri, Joshua Stylman and Peter Hershberg.

The company will use the funds to hire new staff and continue to grow.

Formed about three years ago by Gabriel Weinberg (click here to read his post about the funding), DuckDuckGo uses information from crowdsourced sites (like Wikipedia) with the aim of augmenting traditional results and improving relevance, emphasizing privacy and without recording user information.

In conjunction with the funding, Union Square Ventures’ Brad Burnham (read here his post about the funding), will join DuckDuckGo’s board.
