Appia Raises Funding from DCM

Appia, a Durham, NC-based open app marketplace, has raised an undisclosed sum from DCM.

The investment was made through DCM’s Android-focused fund A-Fund.

Founded in 2008 by CEO Jud Bowman, Appia is an open app marketplace (not an application store) with a catalog of more than 140,000 paid and free apps. It is a marketing platform, which brings the content from over 32,000 developers and content creators to the mobile application storefronts of 40 partners around the world, including Opera, Samsung, T-Mobile, AT&T, Telcelto and Verizon Wireless.

The Appia Developer Program allows developers to market and distribute their apps while the Appia Commerce Platform delivers that content to consumers in over 175 countries and over 2,000 different mobile phones.

The company, which also operates offices in Dallas, TX, and Munich, Germany, raised $10m from Venrock earlier this year (read here).
