Skype Agrees to Acquire GroupMe

Skype has agreed to acquire GroupMe, a New York-based provider of mobile group messaging services for an undisclosed consideration.

Founded in 2010 by Jared Hecht and Steve Martocci, GroupMe allows users to start conversations and keep in touch with your real life network. It is free and it works on every phone.
The company is backed by Khosla Ventures, General Catalyst, First Round Capital, SV Angel, Lerer Ventures, and betaworks (read related news).

The acquisition of GroupMe is intended to complement Skype’s leadership in voice and video communications by providing text-based communications and innovative features. In January 2011, the company also acquired mobile video provider Qik (read related news).
